RESEARCH

Each module of the Care with Compassion program has been the subject of extensive research validating the beneficial effects. Moreover, each segment is non-invasive and suitable for patients undergoing a wide variety of conventional medical treatments and suffering from diverse psychological and physical maladies.

"Alternative therapies address loneliness, isolation, tactile stimulation, and many other issues patients face every day.  With increased relaxation, decreases in agitation, improved sleep, there would surely be increased cooperation and participation and less call-button usage and pharmaceutical intervention needed.  The bottom line is it saves facilities money."       Zarren, M.D., Director, Healing Connection

As part of my thesis work at Lesley University, I conducted a double-blind pilot study at two nursing facilities north of Boston. In each study all three therapy segments were provided to a group of the residents while an equivalent amount of “quality time” only was spent with the control group. A number of subjective and objective measures of health and well-being were employed to evaluate the merits of the program: blood pressure, respiration, mood, focus, eating, sleeping and pain. The results provided dramatic corroborating evidence for the program’s success: the experimental group experienced a 271% greater improvement than did the control group, with the strongest results coming in objective, quantifiable criteria. The experimental group showed marked decreases in blood pressure and respiration rates, indicating reduced stress levels, and substantially improving eating, sleeping, mood and focus, suggesting reduced pain and increased sensory activity and awareness. The residents in the experimental group uniformly reported great satisfaction with the program and demonstrated augmented quality of life according to a wide variety of criteria.

In numerous case studies of individual clients receiving these same services, in other facilities or in private home settings, over a course of months or years these identical findings were confirmed by this pilot study.
