Dorothy walks between the
worlds of traditional and alternative medicine daily. She has
extensive experience in pharmacology as a certified pharmacy
technician. For the majority of that time, she also managed a
local independent drug store. Currently she is employed as a
senior technician in a large chain grocery-pharmacy in the
Boston metropolitan area.
Following her father’s death
and her mother’s placement in a nursing home, and subsequently
experiencing first-hand the inadequacy of care and the gap in
care options in several nursing homes, she elected to renew her
pursuit of higher education opportunities. The dramatic paradigm
shift to alternative medicine began after she entered the
Wellness and Healing Arts program at North Shore Community
College.
At Lesley University the
focus of Dorothy’s studies was the Healing Arts with a
concentration in touch and music therapy. Ultimately, her
mother’s experiences residing in a nursing home became her
inspiration to design a program that could address the gap in
care options she encountered. Care with Compassion was
then customized specifically for the ill, elderly, and those in
late-life stages and their caregivers and could be provided
either in their homes or in nursing facilities.
Dorothy’s three nursing home
internships concentrated on serving the elderly, the ill, and
those in late-life stages in those facilities. She designed and
conducted double blind pilot studies at several North Shore
facilities on the benefits of alternative therapies for the
elderly, the ill and the dying. (see
Research)
This individually tailored
program has been introduced to administrators, nursing staff
members and surgical units at numerous facilities across the
North Shore and Boston areas. Dorothy has administered these
services to clients in hospitals including ICU and surgical
units, nursing facilities, assisted living communities,
rehabilitation centers, and in private home settings.
Dorothy completed her Reiki
Masters training under the guidance of Kristin Webb and Florence
Whipple. She has volunteered at their Reiki clinics at Union
Hospital Reiki clinic, Lynn and Salem Wellness Reiki clinic,
Salem since 1999 which developed into an enriching
apprenticeship.
Dorothy obtained her
COMPASSIONATE TOUCH for Those in Later Life Stages™
practitioner and professional level
certifications from the founder, Dawn Nelson, and an extensive
internship was completed under her supervision.
Her training as an
authorized provider for Advanced Brain Technologies was
conducted by the organization’s founders themselves. Dorothy has
found this highly specialized music to be most beneficial with
her clients especially stroke survivors and those with Lewy Body
Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.
